How I Think About Planning
I’m Matt Buckwalter, founder of MJB Financial Planning, a fee-only, independent firm based in Nebraska.
My path here wasn’t a straight line. I began my career as an engineer, spending over a decade with Intel in Arizona and Oregon. That experience shaped how I think—structured, process-driven, and focused on solving complex problems.
In 2006, I started MJB Financial Planning as an hourly, as-needed service. I didn’t have a grand vision at the time—just a belief that people deserved thoughtful, objective financial guidance. Over time, that work evolved into the ongoing relationships I have with clients today.
I don’t believe in market timing or chasing performance.
I believe in building a plan that works over time—one that adapts as life changes and helps you make confident decisions along the way.
My approach is shaped by a few core ideas:
- Structure and process matter
- Simplicity is powerful
- Good decisions compound over time
That’s what “Simply More Life” means to me.
Where That Comes From
I grew up in Nebraska, shaped by a mix of curiosity and grounded values—my father’s desire to explore and my mother’s deep connection to home.
That balance carries into my work: exploring opportunities while staying anchored in what matters most.
A Bit More Personally
My wife and I met in Phoenix, and we now have three children (two grown and on their own). We share a love for dogs and for getting outside—whether that’s traveling to the mountains or simply enjoying everyday life here in Nebraska.
Photography has become a way for us to slow down and notice the small things—the moments that often matter most.
Why I Do This Work
This wasn’t a career change driven by opportunity—it was driven by a sense that there was a better way to help people.
Today, “Simply More Life” means helping clients create clarity around their finances so they can focus more on living.
If that resonates with you, I’d welcome a conversation.
